Re: Good detailed review (Reply to this comment)

In reference to Broadcom wireless cards, I thought I would note that they do not work well with Ubuntu linux either. I believe it has something to do with how broadcom manages their drivers. Its not linux friendly.
After days of working on getting my wireless to work on Ubuntu, I found that I could run it, but with no security. I believe this had to do with all my windows computers only being able to use WEP encryption, and my linux laptop only able to use WPA encryption.

Hi Paul.
Great job with this review.
I am very intrigued by and interested in Linux. I tinkered with SuSE a few years back (9) and then tinkered with Ubuntu a couple of years ago.
I know you have a lot to cover in an essay like this, but it would be great if you could provide more expert advice on the merits of Linux versus Windows or Mac. Some of the best insight I found was in your conclusion, and that barely scrapes the surface.
I am in a bit of a bind here with my network. I might not be able to convince some family members to spend and convert to Macs. I have already told them that I will not support MS Vista. If they won't move to Macs, then I would like to get them set up with Linux. So to get a nice essay on the merits of Linux and maybe some suggestions on distros - Fedora or Ubuntu or SuSE - would really help.
I am definitely interested in setting up a Linux PC just to fool around with and to learn. I don't want my family messing with Vista and all the headaches of that stuff, so I need to pick up on Linux.
Drop me an email if you add comments to this or reply to this, will you? I probably won't get back to this review. Please email me if you have some time.
Thank you, Sir.

Good detailed review (Reply to this comment)
by naridon
I like this review because it clear and well laid out and explains a lot of necessary details.
However I had some general comments regarding Fedora core 7, in that if you have a broadcom wireless card or Conexant audio cards, it is tough to get them to work together, this might not be fedora's fault but all the same something to worry about and especially because broadcom's linux support may not be that great in terms of drivers and stuff.
So watch out...
peace Go Linux
My system: AMD 64/X2 Turion, 1GB ram; HP Pavillion Dv2000 series, Vista/Fedora 7. I will probably be switcing to XP/OpenSUSE pretty soon.

I did try Fedora Core 3 before that came with a book I checked out at the library. I started using Fedora Core 6 and now 7. Hardware compatibility is great and better than its predecessor, unless you keep updating your system.

Thanks, Rob. I think you should give it a try.
There is a Live version that I forgot to add in the review, but I don't find Live version practical at all, except browsing through the system to see what it has to offer...

I have not used Fedora since 2004 but I was thouroughly impressed with it back then. Looks like it's time for me to check it out again.
Thanks,

I've always been hesitant to fool around with Linux but after reading your excellent review I'm rethinking giving it a go.
