Bag Balm ®10 oz has been a staple in our household for decades. I was raised by a farmer, it was a staple of my childhood, and remains so today.
Since 1899, Bag Balm has been the farmer's companion helping to keep dairy cows from becoming chapped from the unforgiving Vermont winter atmosphere. A cow with a sensitive, sore udder is an angry little woman to try to milk, kicking comes to mind.
Not to mention dodging an angry girl trying her best to stomp the milker into the turf, bash the milker with her head ; all the while squalling like a banshee. Hand milking has its ups and downs in more ways than one. I well remember standing in the milking parlor and watching Daddy dodging a squalling, thrashing cow before he could get her milked.
Sore udder or not, cows need to be milked on schedule to prevent even more problems. I think my decision to teach school and not continue farming may have been devekioed right then and there.
Bag Balm massaged thoroughly onto udder and allowing the ointment to remain to allow as much softening effect as possible BEFORE chapping occurs only makes sense. Some cows are far more amenable to treatment than are othersk I learnedk as I watched Daddy and those cows.
Bag Balm contains lanolin and once applied stays in place to provide moisturizing and softening. Bag Balm works well all year round. And, it works everywhere, and not only in Vermont.
Bag Balm is used across the nation and not only for soothing chapped little ladies having painful udders.
I cannot speak to other products, I am a firm believer that if it ain’t broke I will not try to fix or improve it, Grandpa used Bag Balm, Daddy used Bag Balm, and I have had a can of Bag Balm handy my whole adult life. Grandpa and Daddy actually farmed, I do not. No matter, the salve is excellent for many minor problems in addition to use with dairy cattle.
John L. Norris bought the formula for Bag Balm in 1899 from its original creator in the little town of Wells River, Vermont. The salve was originally created to soften cow udders, and it worked very well. Over time farmers realized that the salve also had a soothing effect on their own scrapes, chapped hands and such.
I like the appearance of that pretty green can with red clover blossoms on the lid. Today I buy Bag Balm from Walgreens drug store or Atwoods our local farm supply. It is also available from pet stores, hardware stores, feed stores, and tack shops across the nation.
The familiar tin packaging for Bag Balm’s has stood the test of time, and has changed little from the inception of the product. Reading the history of the company from the Bag Balm site I learned Mr. Norris traveled from Lyndonville, Vermont to Boston to design the original can. Its distinctive, dominant green color accented by red lettering and red clover surrounding a cow’s head on the top of the lid has remained virtually unchanged for over 100 years. It is the logo on the can in my pantry, and has been on every can I have seen.

Instructions for use from the Bag Balm site includes: For chapped conditions and superficial abrasions. After each milking, apply thoroughly and allow coating to remain on surface. This protective ointment helps to keep superficial tissue moist and soft. For use on cows, thoroughly wash treated teats and udder with separate towels before each milking. To avoid contamination after each milking, bathe the udder with plenty of hot water, strip milk out and dry skin. Apply Bag Balm freely and massage gently with this proven ointment twice daily. For pets, apply Bag Balm liberally to the affected area.

I find the balm/salve indeed does help soothe cuts, scratches, skin irritations, chapping and paw abrasions whether human, critter, or cow.
I used Bag Balm on my kids’ minor scrapes, smoothed it on their chapped little cheeks or noses, and even today on my own dry, hay tossing hands.
My oldest son put it on surface acne pustules, and we use it today on scrapes found on the horses or on sore dog paws.
Pets really are in good hands with Bag Balm® nearby. I do find it goes on fast—and stays on, unless it is slunked off by one obstreperous cat, Gen’l Jackson is prone to hot spots during summer, even during a mild summer such as the one we just experienced this past summer here in Oklahoma he will have at least one. The little wretch fights like a mule when he sees me reach for the can of Bag Balm, I finally resorted to the teeny weeny size in an effort to slip a little upon him unaware. No such luck.
I feel certain the hot spots would respond well, it is not the fault of the product, it is the unwillingness of the little Gen’l to stand still that prevents application.
Especially for those who do hand milk today; Also available from this company are Horse hoof products and Bag Balm® Dilators which help ease bruised, sore or injured teats. Packed in Bag Balm® ointment, these dilators are super flexible. They help keep the teat canal open for easier milking.
Bag Balm Ointment has been used for a century for soothing rashes and chapping, softening and moisturizing and soothing small injuries. Happy to recommend.
