Horror Bests for 2006

The Bottom Line Scream away the nights!
As some of my older readers know, I am an avid fan of the genre "horror", and I am also a picky fan. I been holding off writing a review of the Top Ten of 2006, till I finally had a chance to catch up on my dvd watching. (I don't get a chance to get to the theaters as often as I use to)
So here I am, finally caught up, and I have come up with my list. The first is my all time favorite, the rest that follow are not in no specific order.
I rated my top ten by chill factor, scream factor and of course, gore factor. (got to love those blood and guts!)
No warning on plots....(not a movie review, but a top ten one, duh)
1: The Hills Have Eyes
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this as a remake, but was very surprised and pleased. I liked that the freaks were more developed as main characters, and I loved their make-up FX. The storyline was almost basically the same, but with more story background. Highly appreciated and this movie now belongs in my library. On all factors, a top scream!
2: Silent Hill
My favorite game to play (even over Resident Evils), and a great movie that kept me on my seat. The nurses were my favorite creatures. In fact, I have more respect for those "ehem" angels in white (brrrrr). The story isn't like the game, but it didn't matter. The screaming was loud enough for me to be happy. On the factors, screaming meanies all around.
3: Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
Leatherface growing up, oh so cute! Oh, just don't look at him without the mask on. Love it that the sheriff was played by the same actor as the TCM remake. (YOU GOT MAIL!) Same house even. What really got to me in this film is that characters were finally told about. How the sheriff became the sheriff. Where Leatherface was born, and by whom. And why these folks love people over for dinner so much. Factor: Screamy Meanies!
4: The Covenant
All around enjoyable movie that had strong characters and and interesting background storyline. Would like to see this story continue on in a sequel even. Great music throughout. DVD version has good extras that I recommend watching after seeing the movie. Factor rating: no screams, just plain fun.
5: The Grudge 2
Wasn't too happy with the complete movie, but there were parts that I was greatly pleased with and that is the only reason this movie hits my top ten. Wished Gellar was in it more, but loved her "ending", and of course, loved that The Grudge complete story is finally told. There is a sequel here if they wish to continue with it. Factor: a bit on the shaking side during the "errrrs" sounds.
6: Omen 666
Who doesn't love evil little boys? Another remake I wasn't too sure of, but was pleased at the end. Kept with the main storyline and I actually liked this little boy better that the original. Factor: Evil laughter abounds.
7: Final Destination 3
Big fan of the Destination movies. I love that they keep finding new ways to kill people off. The rollercoaster deaths was just the tip of the scream factor....there was so much more and I hope they continue with the destination stories. I look forward to them. Factors: Yummy...more death!
8: Hostel
Sex and violence. Paying to maim, kill, torture someone. Heck, what else would a horror fan want for a fantasy vacation? Get rid of the sex stuff at the beginning and get to the good stuff already. Eyeballs falling out, fingers gone and getting rid of that blasted achelle's heel, this is a must see for horror fans. Factors: Argh, a high screaming, bloody scene stealing yes!
9: Wolf Creek
Don't people ever think of getting thier travel plans by proper agents when they go overseas? Well, these characters didn't and boy did they meet up with a nice local boy. He really helped them out....and I mean out. Factor: screamy meanies all around.
10: Jennifer
Not a well known movie, but should have been. That beautiful body on such a ghastly face. What a man wouldn't do when he thinks with his little brain....loved the story, loved the characters. Factors: thought about it (got to see it to get that one!)
There is many more, but these are my top ten. Now of course, they don't overtop my all time favs (TCM original, Night of the Living Dead, Dracula) but they are finally coming out with some good remakes, and original stories for me to write about them here.
Happy Nightmares!
