| Andyman's Full Review: Nikon N6006 Film Camera |
I used a N6006 for about three years. It was an excellent entry-level camera for a passionate student of photography to cut his teeth on. The camera offers a smooth spectrum between fully automatic everything to fully manual everything. I liked being able to set one aspect of the shot, like shutter speed, to manual and let the camera take care of everything else. That way, you only have to think about what's key to the shot you're taking. Very nice. The metering was very smart; as soon as I started using this camera, the contrast balance of my photos improved dramatically. The controls make sense, the autofocus is reliable and quick, everything was going great until...
A tiny little piece of plastic broke. A tiny piece no bigger than a grain of rice, no thicker than a dime. This piece of plastic happened to hold the rear door shut, though. There's a hooking mechanism in the camera which catches this plastic hook, on the door, when you load the film and close the camera. Well, with this piece of plastic broken, the door won't stay shut, I can't load film, I can't use the camera.
Why not fix it? Well, if you examine the camera, you realize that the entire rear door is one big cast of black plastic, and to fix that tiny hook would mean replacing the door. The door is hinged on tiny screws, which are hidden behind panels fixed with adhesive. Yes... you get the point: this thing is cheaply put together. It would cost more than the price of the camera to get it fixed (according to the shop), even though 99% of the camera is intact and working perfectly!! Why make such a key contact point out of cheap plastic?
In the end, all the great design in the world doesn't help when the camera is busted. This may not happen to you, and certainly shouldn't reflect on the whole product line, but it does seem to be a sign of the times: build it cheap, sell it cheap.
