Extended Warranty Scam

I'm sure by now if you're reading this you've gotten a call from a telemarketer that "Your extended warranty has expired" and you need to renew it. I've gotten a dozen or so of these at home and work. I let the person go on with his spiel and then tell him I don't have any warranties that are expiring, and you're not even able to tell me "what vehicles" I have or own.

Don't fall for this scam even if you do have an extended warranty that's about to expire. Get your paperwork out and deal directly with the company you originally had set it up with. If in doubt call the dealer you purchased the vehicle from, they should have a record of it.

And by all means, DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD NUMBER!

There are plenty of posts on the internet, just search for "extended warranty scam" There's a lot of this going around. I obviously haven't been a victim and thankfully I don't know anyone that has.

RE: Might...

I have been getting a lot of automated phone calls about losing the warranty on my car. These are automated, so there's no one to actually talk to. Weird... I just hang up. I interpreted the calls to be about the car's factory warranty, not the extended warranty -- which I don't have.

I also get trash calls on my cell phone from some guy who sounds like he's speaking on the radio in Spanish. These calls come from Florida and I used to get about one a week, now down to one a month or so.

RE: Might...

Thank you both, I'll post this in personal finance.

Bob, I always look at the number from my caller ID screen to see who's calling me. I'll google the phone number and half the time the results say it's a telemarketer scam. I've also noticed they're getting clever and covering their tracks by inputting a different name in the "caller ID info" and phone number so if you call it back, it's just some random name and number.

About half the calls I get on my cell phone (other than family) are from the 999 and 000 area codes: (999) 999-9999 and (000) 000-0000.

Since the phone is listed with the Federal "Do Not Call" list, I've tried without success to get my carrier to tell me what the real numbers - they're invariably fax machines - are, but Verizon ain't sayin' without a warrant. Weird: they let the G listen to me without my knowing, but let me open a can o' whupass on some telemarketer for violating a federal law? ain't gonna happen...
