Dated comment phatmojo. Nikon discontinued the N90s earlier this year (2002). Howard Creech is right on with his review of this camera. It's a fine camera (I own one and use it a lot), but the technology is "dated" and it is a bulky camera. It gets heavy after a while, especially if one attaches the battery pack/vertical grip.

B&H Photo in NYC still sells them new because they have a fairly large inventory of them. The newer F100 is now a better choice and is more robustly built.

Cheers,

Howard,

Thank you for leaving your comments on my photographic articles on the BitBender website.

A couple of months back it was the 995 for my son and today it is the N80 for my boss. I recommended a camera to him almost 8 years ago (Olympus Mju zoom for just 200 bucks when he was a bachelor which is still in order and in use. Today he wanted a decent camera to take pictures of his kids without really worrying about controls and the N80 came to my mind. Although I did mention this model to him but just wanted to know how you felt about this particular model. After getting back home and checking your review I am pleased to know you approve of this model.

As usual an excellent review.

You sure are helping folks here make an informed decision.

phatmojo, Thanks again for your comment (and rating) I believe that you are mistaken in stating that the N90S "will never be discontinued" as new technology is introduced, older technology is "always" discontinued. The N90S is a fantastic camera, and it has "stood the test of time" but the N90s is closer to the F4S and N8008S technology wise, than it is to F5, F100, N80, and D1. As for the "high" price, the N90S is actually quite a bargain right now, since the price has dropped quite dramatically (as Nikon trys to sell off "on hand" stock) in the last year and a half.

phatmojo, Thank you for your rating and your comment. The N80 that I "checked out" was an early production sample, and the flash was lift up. Secondly, what I said was, "lenses manufactured in the Nikon F mount will fit not only the first Nikon SLR (introduced in 1959) but every Nikon SLR introduced since" it is quite a stretch to translate "fit" into complete function. You can use manual lenses on the N80, you may have to meter first with an AF lens (or use a separate meter)however, if you have a Nikkor 35/1.4, you can use it. Since this lens (along with many other "classic" Nikkors) has no AF equivalent, you can still take advantage of the fantastic resolution and the fast aperture. Many Nikon users (myself included) have been using manual lenses with auto focus cameras (and giving up a few features) since AF was first introduced. If you want "maximum" flexibility in the Nikon line then you need to buy a professional level camera like the F100 or the F5.

The N90(s) is not going to be discontinued and probably will never be discontinued. It has stood the test of time and is a great camera even for its high price.

Although I agree with you that the n80 is a wonderful camera I do not think your review was that great (to the oppostion of the other comments on your review.) First of all, the flash IS a pop-up flash. You hit the button on the side and *POP* it pops up. I do not know where you are getting this "lifting" from. And second:

"Nikon's corporate philosophy has always been that if you purchased a Nikon SLR, you would not be left holding a bag of lenses that could not be used with the firms newest cameras and technology."

This comment actually says that Nikon is going against their philosphy because the n80 CANNOT meter with ANY manual lenses. Thus rebdering them useless. And thus, I am left holding a bag of lenses I can't use.

Do not get me wrong. I LOVE this camera. I am just trying to keep an objective opinion. I think this would be the PERFECT camera, if it would just be able to use manual lenses. I have to go out and triple for the more expensive auto focus lens (which can be set on manual.) So if you want this, get the n70 or n90s which can do most if not all nikon and nikon compatible lenses. But is you don't care for manual focus or don't own any manual lenses, then this may be the camera for you.

Nikon's marketing is much more realistic about what the marketplace actually wants. I think they are just trying to give their amateur fans access to more Nikon lenses, without really taking anything away from their "hardcore" pro and advanced amateur buyers. Pretty smart, really, give everyone what they want.

Great review, I wasn't aware that Nikon was bringing out the new N80 but then again I am in Canada...it will probably be called the F80 up here. You have written a review that will make a lot of people head to the stores to check the camera out. What do you think about Nikon's decision to have their basic lenses (under $300 US) made in Thailand and move away from the metal lens mounts to plastic ?

Vice, you made a couple of very good points. There are two types of potential buyers that visit electronic reviews...those who want every bit of info they can find to help them make a decision based on features and specifications, and those who don't want or need technical info, they just want to know how well the camera (or whatever) will suit their needs. Anecdotal reviews are fine, IF they cover all the bases, in such a manner that helps potential buyers make a decision. I don't have a problem with either approach. Both methods are valuable to epinions.

Well-written, too. Not exactly written for the amateur, but the review gives enough info to get the idea across to one. I'm going to have to look into this camera.

I still love my EOS 1N camera! Yes, I also use the Nikon f4s but ther eis too many small whistles and bells on the darn thing.

Can't beat the Canon EF 300/2.8IS, EF 28-70/2.8L coupled with the 1.4X converter . . . the photos are awesome!

Howard,
I guess that if I want to make a real jump from my N8008s, I gotta go to the F100 rather than the soon-to-be-discontinued N90s. I think my 8008 is still a superior body to the N80 despite some cool features like the on-demand viewfinder grid which would be bitchin' for architectural shots.
This is the best review I've seen on the N80 so far anywhere. Good job.
