| truevine's Full Review: Platypus 1 Water Bottle |
I bought a couple of these (1 litre each, with push/pull cap) about 4 years ago.
There is little negative to say about these if any.
I personally like them a lot.
First of all, it doesn't give any taste to the water, which is great and allows you to really appreciate the different taste of springs.
(That sounds silly but I have learned through my travel the importance of water taste, especially for making the so important 'tea' in the desert. Some are salty, some are sweet. Try the different ones from the shop and you know what I am speaking about.)
I even recently carried some rustic homemade vinegar from my parents. The pans got bent in the airplane, but not a single drop out off the Platypus.
I was very concerned about the taste for future usage, as the vinegar stayed quite a few days in the 'bottle'.
Last minute decision to go camping and just put the vinegar in another recipient, and give it a quick rinse to get rid off the bits and to my surprise no taste of vinegar.
Great, These inexpensive plastic Platypus (paid around £4.00 each) don't give taste, but also don't take taste.
When I don't use them I just rinse them let them dry (that may take a bit of time) and store them until next time.
These really need little care, and I store them in the middle of all my outdoor stuff with the cap pulled out.
When in use, I found them fitting perfectly in my backpack sides pockets. I never had a leak, and I am not to careful whether or not I rest my backpack on the side or not. (I have to say it was my prime concern when purchasing them).
The pull/push caps still work perfectly, either for drinking from, adding water to a pan, or washing your hands. Keep it straight, give it a little squeeze and you can control the liquid output.
And it doesn't stop here! Once out of the bag, the base is strong enough to allow them to stand straight on the ground even with the full kilogram of water.
Finally I believe, it is possible to add a different cap with a tube to drink on the go.
Overall, this was one of the best improvements in the later years for liquid carrying. They weigh very little empty contrary to traditional solid bottles and it is a real pleasure to know I am carrying just the water not the container.
