Little Golden Books have been a childhood staple for decades. My mother got them for us when my siblings and I were first learning to read. I began using them when I entered my first classroom, back when dinosaurs were just crawling from the eggs, and I use them today in our group work box set next to the table where each group, red, yellow, blue, or in the case of this year with only nine students to date, red and blue meet to work on seatwork, journal writing and the like.

A small blurb on each page leads into the word listing. "Huckle Cat says hello. He introduces his sister Sally and his buddy Lowly Worm. Featured on this page are clothing items to include: boots, mittens, a sweater a jacket, a pair of sneakers, and socks. Each drawing is labeled making the book usable for Little People as their journal writing progresses.
Pages showing a variety of vehicles include color words while Sally and clothing, as well as pages depicting things around the home, at the supermarket, and out on the farm, at an airport and at the harbor provide more grist for young reader writers.
Four pages featuring an alphabetical listing with both in upper and lower case lettering, offer young writers more words to use for sentence writing in journals.
Osage County First grade like the pictures showing the family working together in the kitchen. Because so many parents work today kids are well able to identify with a Dad taking care of dishes or cooking a meal.
Mom is not relegated to kitchen chores and Dad is not left off the hook as Mom toils to get a meal together.
