coresponger's Full Review: Lisa Gardner - The Next Accident
The Next Accident is another piece of modern fiction that attempts to confuse and surprise the reader through its plot twists in this murder mystery. This novel contains many parallels to other successful forays in this field in recent history such as Silence of The Lambs, namely that the story involves a FBI agent, Quince Piercy. This agent works for the FBI’s behavioral science unit as a profiler of serial killers, similar to the role played by agent Starling in Silence of The Lambs. Other smaller details make this work similar in its underpinnings to the more successful novels in the same genre.
I found this novel to be enjoyable and a quick read. In the novel Piercy’s family is being stalked by a killer, who has gradually killed off his daughter, wife, and father. In a desperate attempt to catch the killer, Piercy, his sole remaining daughter, and Piercy’s love interest have teamed up. I will not divulge any more of the details of the plot, for too much more would ruin it, as the plot is not too complex. A limited amount of characters are introduced throughout the novel, leaving one with very few to select as the villain. However, the novel does contain a nice twist at the end as the obvious killer turns out not to be the one Piercy is searching for. However, the astute reader will probably realize exactly who the killer is early on in the novel due to some very strong foreshadowing by the author.
I think that enjoyment can be had from this book by many readers. The key to enjoyment of the novel would be to not think about it too much, because of the small number of characters involved (which makes it fairly easy to figure out where the plot is headed). While the author attempts to steer the reader in one direction, the attempt is somewhat overdone, thus making it a little obvious that that the story is not going to wind up with this individual being the true culprit. I would recommend this novel to anyone who is looking for an easy read that does not want to get bogged down by a complex plot or complex characters.
