| islandalex's Full Review: Nikon Nuvis S APS Film Camera |
I brought the Nuvis S almost a year ago and I carry it around everywhere with me. Since then I have developed over 30 rolls of film, in black and white, colour, panoramic, and classic.
It has a wide range zoom, and uses an easy to find battery.(lithium CR2) The lense is a high-quality Nikon lens. And, from what I have heard from camera specialists, it is one of the best.
The aluminum case that slides closed over the camera is very durable. It also protects the camera from splashes. Also, it increases the size of the camera making it easier to hold and focus.
I really beat up my camera. I use it for traveling, or when i go surfing or sailing. I have even dropped my camera in the water. (It was in a leather case as well, only the area around the case was damp) Trust me, I do not recommend this, I almost had a heart attack!
Canon makes a leather pouch that fits the camera perfectly. The shop where I brought my camera gave me one free and I use it as a bit of added protection to an already durable camera.
I bought the camera on Front Street, St Maarten. The Duty Free capital of the Caribbean...or so I've been told. You can bargian with the vendors, and usually by the end you can have a few extra things thrown it. Mine was the case, film, and spare battery.
It has 30 titles in 12 different languages that are easy to select. The titles and the date get printed on the back of the photograph.
There is a very good red-eye-reduction option. It emits a bright light before the flash rather that the series of bright flashes on many other cameras that leaves you blinking and blind for a few moments.
The defult flash setting is automatic, however you can change it easily. When you tshut it, it returns to the defult setting. The flash is powerfull, quite impressive for its small size. It is the only part of the camera that is exposed when the casing is closed. However, it must be strong because I have yet to break it. There is a ridge built into the flash that makes it impossible to have your finger over it without knowing it.
The three photo options (Classic, H, and Panoramic) allow for more creative picture composition. However, once developed, you can change any picture on the roll to amother version, thanks to the index prind. THe view-finder changes shape when you change the picture format, which is helpfull in preventing you to take a whole roll of panoramics!!
THe view-finder is also easily adjustable to make up for vision correction. You can change the diopter.
The mid-roll-change is my favorite. I like taking black and white pictures, but I often dont use a whole roll at a time. With the APS system, i can change mid roll and then go back to the roll at a later date. (On the end of the film cartridge it tells you if it is a new film, a partialy exposed film, a fully exposed film, or a developed film.
Ok, back to the pictures... They come out really well. THe colours are crisp and the overall picture is very clear. I was a bit disappointed with the pamoramic pictures. They are more grainy than the classic pictures. However, this may be because most of them are at a distance, and those pictures dont seem to focus too well.
