| baylorgrad's Full Review: Nikon Nuvis S APS Film Camera |
This was a total impulse buy. I saw the Nikon Nuvis S in a magazine ad and drove straight to the camera store to see if one was in stock. I was in luck, and I walked out of the store with one of the best APS cameras I've ever used.
One of the things I love about the Nuvis S is its size. It's about as thick as two packs of cards, so it fits nicely in a purse or pocket. A long cord is included, so you can hang the camera around your neck. Even when you open the camera -- the stainless steel cover slides completely over the lens and controls -- it is smaller than many other cameras.
The controls on the back can be hard to control if you have large hands, but are generally easy to handle.
The 3x zoom lens ranges from focal lengths of 22.5mm to 66mm. And, you can take pictures of subjects as close as 1.5 feet with the Nuvis S. I wish the zoom would be longer, but it's great for the kind of camera it is.
Also, as with many APS cameras, you can choose from three print types: classic, wide-vision and panorama. The switch for these is on top of the camera; I've found it hard sometimes to change from one to another unless I use my fingernails -- the switch is virtually flat against the body of the camera.
The Nuvis S also has an LCD panel, which shows you these things, among others: flash mode, the red-eye reduction indicator, low battery power indicator, the month/day/year, a title ("birthday," "vacation," etc.) if you've chosen to display one, and a film cartridge indicator.
Another interesting feature is Mid-Roll Change. This allows you to take out a partially exposed roll and switch it with another one. I've used this feature to change from color film to black and white.
Regarding flash...when the available light is low or the subject is backlit, the flash will fire automatically. Other settings include flash cancel, anytime flash and slow sync flash.
I've had good results with the Nuvis S. One of my few complaints is the price -- but I'm sure you can find the camera for around $200 or less.
