| kenb4hondas's Full Review: Nikon Nuvis S APS Film Camera |
I'm not a photography or camera aficionado but I do appreciate the opportunity to take good pictures, and provide a central point for family histories, conversations, and sharing enjoyable memories with others.
I have always owned two cameras. One, a 35mm SLR with a long lens for those photos you can carefully pose and take full advantage of film, lighting, etc. I've also kept a small, compact point-and-shoot camera handy for those moments when I didn't have the time, patience or opportunity to take a posed shot. The Nuvis S APS has proven to be a valued companion that more than exceeds my expectations.
I was preparing to take an Alaskan Cruise and didn't think I wanted to lug my trusty 35mm, so I started researching, and settled on the Nuvis S. It is an APS camera, which requires different film. While that can be a bother, and should be a consideration for you, but I wanted real panoramic shots not just the second-best (IMO) imitations the 35mm point-and-shoot panoramics. The Nuvis S is also a zoom camera, which offers great opportunities. As expected, you can get the classic 35mm size print and the panoramic; but you can also get an 'in-between' larger size, all with a simple easy to understand adjustments. After my first couple of rolls, I began to aggressively switch between print sizes and zoom depths depending on my subject. The result is wonderfully improved and interesting photos.
Back to the cruise...I finally decided to take both cameras. In retrospect, I'm glad I did because the 35mm with long lens can't be beaten for those distance shots I had at Glaciers, whales, etc. But I have to admit, my Nuvis S gave me almost as good pictures. And because of the convenience, I think on the next trip I'm willing to go it alone with just me and my Nuvis S. But this trip gave me the opportunity to make good comparisons upon which to base my opinion.
With my $300 35mm, and additional $300 zoom lens I get most of the same effects (albeit without a panoramic print). But with my Nuvis S, I have supreme convenience and portability.
The only negative to note is that because it is so compact, some of the settings may be difficult for those with limited mobility in their hands to negotiate. But there doesn't seem to be a way to have a compact design that closes up securely in it's own stainless steel case while still offering larger knobs and buttons. Nikon has a good reputation for quality products, particularly their lens. This has proven true for me with this purchase, as I have had zero problems.
The Nuvis S seems to be fair-traded everywhere at $279, but I was able to find mine on ebay for $240 with no sales tax.
If I didn't have a camera, and was considering making only one camera purchase, it would be the Nuvis S. Further, it would make an excellent choice for a young, active family seeking quality photography.
