| bnlitin's Full Review: Nikon N50 Film Camera |
I received the N50 as a gift and I thought at first that it was a very good camera. The N50 is well built (as are most Nikons).
Let me also say that a good photographer can take great pictures with almost any camera. The N50 is really more useful as a point and shoot then as an amateur photographer instrument.
What should a good 35mm SLR do? After all, the most important ingredient in any camera is the lens. Put a good lens on an N50 and you can take as good a picture as on an F100 (provided you're experienced). I think a good SLR should give one the right information (ie. metering, etc) and be easily adjusted in the field.
Here are my main problems with the N50
1) The autofocus is super slow and exteremely loud
2) The user interface is a complete mess
If you take pictures occasionally, then the N50 might be good enough. But, if that's your purpose in getting an SLR, then maybe you should get a Point & Shoot like the Yashica T4 instead. Believe me, my T4 will take better pictures then the N50 with the Nikkor 28-80 zoom or the Quantaray lens.
One buys an SLR *because* one wants to be able to manipulate aperture settings, play with different lenses, be creative.
If you want a Nikon SLR, then don't buy the N50 - buy the N80 instead.
If you can't afford the N80, get a used Pentax K1000 and some used Pentax lenses. Also, take a photography class and shoot some slides.
