The Nikon N50 is well, an entry-level camera for beginner photographers. I think it is a very good addition for any beginner in photography.
The camera has all the basic functions, and you can switch to all AUTO modes with 4 easy presets, including scenery, portraits, close-up and AUTO. In advance mode you get 4 more presets, fast action, silhouette, night scene and a blurry-fast action thingy. You can also set it to aperture-priority mode, shutter-priority mode, or totally manual. The matrix light metering in the N50 performs fairly well, but sometimes in complex light conditions you have to balance the light sources a little bit to get a better reading. It has all the basic functions of a SLR, except you can't push the film ISO, and sometimes it doesn't recognize a ISO800 film and read it as ISO400, so you will need to manually adjust the exposure ( it can't recognize the Kodak 800 Max, but recognize the Fuji Superia 800). You can test with various ISO when the film is NOT in there, but once you put in the film, you are locked to that particular ISO. That is one thing I don't quite understand; since you can do ISO light calculation, why you don't let us push our ISO?
I bought the camera with a Sigma 28-80 Aspherical lense. The images are not as sharp as I expect, perhaps it's because it's sort of a MACRO lense. But it does close-ups really well, images are sharp and colors are rich. Apart from that, everything is quite alright with this camera. If you are a beginner in photography, I'd recommend you to go with this one first, or if you have some extra money, get a N70.
