pennyruba's Full Review: Doctor Who - The Ribos Operation
Yes, it's that time...Time for another Doctor Who review by PennyRuba. As you probably figured out from the title, today I choose to review Doctor Who, The Ribos Operation, staring Tom Baker.
For those of you who don't know the Doctor:
Doctor Who is a timelord. He travels all over the known and unknown galaxy, through time, in a "Tardis", which is basically is his time ship. Sounds fun so far, right? LOL. It is a British television show that my husband and I collect. As to date, we have 41 episodes. This series started in the 60's and lasted until the 90’s.
Now that is out of the way, on to the review!
The day starts out innocently enough. The Doctor (Tom Baker) and K9 Mark II are discussing plans for a vacation. All of a sudden, a white light appears and everything stops. The doctor is walking backwards out of his Tardis. He is now in a beach setting, with only one chair. A “man” appears in the chair and “asks” the doctor to go on a mission. The Doctor asks this “man” what would happen if he declines the mission. The “man” says “Nothing” The doctor repeats “Nothing?” The Man says “Ever”.
The Doctor’s mission is to find the 6 “keys to time”. The keys are disguised in any shape, any size, any where, any time.
The “man”, who calls himself the White Guardian, assigns the Doctor an assistant. The new assistant is also a time lord, but fresh out of the academy. Her name is, but Doctor Who quickly shortens it to Romana, against her wishes. Romana was given a tool to help find the missing keys. They plug it in and off they go.
Finding the first key is not easy. The first reading of the tool does not match the second reading. Can the tool be trusted? Are there agents from the Black Guardian also looking for the same key? Can Romana put up with the Doctor’s attitude?
I say buy the tape and see! I have given you enough of the plot line, now on to my take of this episode.
The Ribos Operation is the first tape in a new series. I would only buy it if you are planning to buy all 6 key to time tapes.
Key features.
The introduction of Romana. Personally, I like Romana. She is a Time Lord and can hold her own with the Doctor. Most of his companions do not equal him intellectually. If you know the actress name, please let me know and I will add it!
K9. I HATE K9!!! But he was popular at the time. He is suppose to be a high tech computer in dog form.
White Guardian/key to time. The fact that it is a key to time episode is the entire reason I bought it.
As always, the special effects are terrible. Just wait until you see the Shrievenzale! The best shot is in the catacombs, I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when I saw it. :)
Transmission Date : 2nd September 1978 to 23rd September 1978.
As always, feel free to email me or leave a comment!
