Pros: Outstanding performances. Great soundtrack. Jarmusch's best movie to date.
Cons: This is the kind of movie that you have to be in the mood for.
The Bottom Line: The bottom line is that this is a fantastic movie. It is still not a movie for everyone, and a viewer may not go for its dark, existentialist approach.
Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man" was released into the theaters in 1996, and hit a resounding thud in the minds of moviegoers. I do not personally recall it even being in the theaters myself, even living in a major city. Of course, the film was eventually released on video, and from there I've been a huge enthusiast for this film ever since.
For starters, the performances are top notch. It is sad to recount that this movie was Robert Mitchum's last, but he himself is excellent in a great comedic role. There are roles by actors that you cannot recognise, compeletly vanishing into each respectively.
The film deals with many subjects. The destruction of the enviorment, industrialization, the 'rank and file' workplace, racism, violence (which is depicts graphically), the holocaust against Native Americans, friendship, and of course passing on.
Johnny Depp's character is taken along a journey from Cleveland to the town known as "Machine" for a job opportunity. His travel begins with a very strange and bizzare trip on the railroad out west to the town of Machine. He meets a series of strange characters and situations in his railroad car. Once he reaches his destination, the business that promised him a job has hired someone else in his place. Johnny's character shortly afterwards meets a beautiful young woman at the local tavern, and through a series of strange and tragic events, he eventually turns into an outlaw.
This is one of the rare movies where the atmosphere and mood is just as much a character as any of the living, breathing actors. What is most interesting is Jim's way of contrasting sound. There are many points in this movie where it is absolutely silent, and in contrast, many points in this film where the sound is enormous and loud. Neil Young's guitar work reflected this approach as well.
I feel that this film deserves a second look by not only critics, but by the public in general. It is in my opinion essential for any true movie fan.
