Remember watching the clock, waiting for the X-Men cartoon to come on after school? Well, I do : ) Or was it after work?? I can’t remember. But it equals the same, I loved the X-Men cartoons! So you can imagine my excitement when I saw the preview for this movie! I just knew I would have to see it.
When my best friend was having a bad week, and oh, the X-Men movie was coming out this weekend, I jumped on the excuse to go. We stuck my Hubby with the girls and off we went to the matinee show right after I got off work Saturday. Good thing for me that she wanted to see it as well.
Now that you know how I actually got to go see a movie in a theater, a very rare occurrence, on to the review!
The Plot
Some time in the near future, evolution takes a jump. Mutants are the after effects of it. Humans, being afraid of anything that they do not understand, are lobbying congress to “register” mutants. They are hated because they are different. Not everyone feels this way, but the majority does. Some mutants (bad guys), believe that the two will never co-exist. Others (X-Men), believe that mutants and humans can live together. It is their cause to stop the mutants who wish to kill humans and to legally fight against the humans who wish to “register”/banish mutants.
The Cast
Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). One of the most popular character’s in X-Men. I found him to be wonderfully portrayed and true to character.
Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart). Xavier is the man of reason in the series. He is the X-Men leader, and for a good reason. Patrick Stewart was the perfect person to play this role!
Magneto (Ian McKellen). Magneto is the leader of the bad guys. He is suppose to be the worst of the worst, but I just did not see it that way. This character could have been played better.
Jean Grey (Famke Janssen). Jean Grey plays an important role in this movie, too bad they didn’t get a better actress.
Cyclops (James Marsden). Cyclops must wear eye gear at all time. This takes away most facial expressions from the character. James Marsden did a good job in this.
Storm (Halle Berry). Storm is one of the most popular female X-Men. This movie did not have time to build Storm’s character as well as I would like.
Rogue (Anna Paquin). A lot of the plot revolves around Rogue. Just imagine, not being able to touch anyone, For if you do, you could kill them.
Sabertooth (Tyler Mane). Wow! I loved this character in this movie. In the cartoons, I never liked him. That just goes to show how well he was played. The only thing that I didn’t like is how the movie did not go into why he hated Wolverine so much.
Toad (Ray Park). Another bad guy. Just don’t kiss him ;) lol...His tongue is over 3 feet long. Think of a real toad, human size.
Mystique (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos). This is the one that takes the cake. Mystique can change to look like anyone she wants. Not only does her looks change, but her voice as well. She is a vital part of this movie
Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison). He is the Senator who is the arrow head of the mutant registration.
Small minded prick. Just the way he was suppose to be : )
How I felt after the movie
I felt a little cheated. Now, don’t get me wrong, I liked the movie. But I still have mixed feelings about it. The reason? As a long time X-Men fan, I knew the character interactions already. I knew how Wolverine got his claws. I knew how Rogue got the stripe in her hair. I just knew.
I understand why they had to go back and cover all these issues, but for a person like me, it just seemed redundant. I kept waiting for the fun to start. The movie kept with the story line I know and love, which I greatly appreciated. I just expected more action and less story building.
If you are a newbie to the X-Men, I think you will like it more then I did.
I don’t want to give the movie away, just give you enough info to make your own decision on whether you want to see it or not. Did I?
*As for the title, Wolverine cartoon costume was yellow spandex. In this movie they all where black leather.
**I never read the comic books, just watched the cartoons.
As always, feel free to email me or leave a comment!
