I have never been satisfied with the pictures that most point and shoot cameras take. I was also unsure if I would be able to handle a 35mm SLR camera. Fortunately I was able to try out the N70 before I purchased it. At the time I was just learning what shutter speed and aperture meant. Wanting instant gratification with perfect pictures the first time, I set out to see how smart this camera was. Shooting under a variety of conditions from full sun to shade to nighttime, I tested most of the camera's automatic modes. The N70 did not disappoint me. I have pictures from that first roll of film I ever shot hanging on the wall in my office. The automatic exposure modes and autofocus more than made up for my newbie status. I purchased the camera as soon as I saw the developed prints.
I have had the camera several months now and I have started using some of the more advanced features. Using the more advanced features does require a little more time reading the manual and experimenting with the controls to be familiar enough with the camera to make sure you do not miss the shot you are composing. Early on, more than once, I have missed a shot while trying to reconfigure the camera in manual mode. Of course I could have just switched back to automatic mode and relied on the camera to give me probably a much better picture than I would have gotten tinkering with the manual settings.
The only down side to the N70 is the lack of depth of field preview. I learned a "trick" from a chat room that does allow a person to see depth of field preview but if you are not careful you can drop the lens off the front of the camera.
I am excited about the N70 and have to restrain myself from going out and buying new lens, speedlights and other options to feed my new hobby. But I do have the best of both worlds, on automatic the N70 works like a point a shoot although giving much better pictures, and it has plenty of features to satisfy many of the professional's needs.
