About frank_vanriper

I'm an ex-newspaper reporter turned professional photographer. Since '92 I've been the nationally syndicated photography columnist of the Washington Post, with my column now appearing exclusively in the "Camera Works" section of Washingtonpost.com I spent 20 years as a DC politicial writer for the New York Daily News (White House correspondent, national political correspondent, Nieman Fellow, biographer of John Glenn) before leaving politics for a new career in commercial and documentary photography. My photography books include "Faces of the Eastern Shore" ('92)and "Down East Maine/A World Apart,"('98) which was nominated for a Pulitzer. My greatest kick is combining my photographs with my words, something I never was able to do as a reporter because of the twin constraints of time and tradition. I live in Washington DC with my wife and partner, photographer/sculptor Judith Goodman. Our next venture is a joint photography book on Venice in the winter.
